Appeal Court Rejects Umar's Appeal, Validates Sokoto Governor's Win

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has rejected an appeal by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Saidu Umar, challenging the victory of Sokoto State Governor Ahmad Aliyu. The court stated that much of the evidence presented by the appellants in support of their case was inadmissible. It affirmed the tribunal’s decision to expunge incompetent exhibits that were either not pleaded or irrelevant to the case. The tribunal, led by Justice Haruna Mshelia, had earlier ruled that the petitioners failed to substantiate the allegations raised against the governor, including claims of election irregularities and non-compliance with the Electoral Act. The petitioners had also alleged that the governor and his deputy submitted forged certificates to the Independent National Electoral Commission. Dissatisfied with the tribunal’s decision, the PDP and Umar sought redress at the Court of Appeal, which has now upheld the victory of Aliyu of the All Progressives Congress as the governor of Sokoto State.
