Benue Traditional Ruler and 17 Others Arrested for Alleged Kidnapping

The Benue State Police Command has apprehended a traditional ruler and 17 others on charges of kidnapping two traders in Mchia Market, situated in the Logo local government area of Benue State. The Police, in a successful operation, not only rescued the kidnapped victims but also seized weapons from the suspects.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Catherine Anene, revealed in a statement on Sunday that on 23/11/2023, around 18:00hrs, the Logo Police Division received information about a bandit group, armed with dangerous weapons, who had targeted a market in Mchia, Logo LGA, resulting in the abduction of two traders.

Anene explained, “Upon the receipt of this information, which was relayed to Police Headquarters Makurdi, the Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, CP. George Chuku, ordered the deployment of tactical teams to raid the area and ensure that victims were rescued.”

The police team executed the operation on 25/11/2023, successfully rescuing the two victims from a hideout at the compound of Zaki Tule Nyam, a tax collector. The victims revealed that they had been held captive, and their families were given a one-week ultimatum to source and pay a ransom of 10 million naira before their release, threatening repercussions if the payment was not made before the arrival of the police.

As a result of the operation, Zaki Nyam and seventeen additional suspects were apprehended in the compound for further investigation. The seized items included a dane gun and a machete.

While emphasizing the ongoing investigation, the Commissioner of Police urged the residents of Logo LGA to collaborate with the police teams sent to the area, providing valuable information for the apprehension and prosecution of the criminals.
