Edozie Njoku Urges INEC to Adhere to Court Mandate and Acknowledge Him as APGA Chairman

The national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Edozie Njoku, urged the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu, to officially acknowledge him as the party’s national chairman during a press briefing in Abuja. Edozie Njoku warned Yakubu of potential imprisonment for contempt, emphasizing that a court had already issued an order mandating his recognition.

Addressing reporters on November 24, 2023, Edozie Njoku revealed that the FCT High Court 40 had given Yakubu a 14-day ultimatum on November 9, 2023, to recognize him as APGA’s national chairman or face incarceration. The court had found Yakubu and another party official, Chief Victor Oye, liable but allowed a brief window for compliance.

Expressing concern over INEC’s actions, Edozie Njoku accused the electoral body of undermining judicial orders and compromising justice. He highlighted that their return to court on November 29, 2023, would potentially lead to Yakubu’s imprisonment for failing to heed the court’s directive.

Edozie Njoku criticized INEC’s decision to appeal the court’s ruling, alleging that they were confident in manipulating the judicial process. He questioned the necessity of INEC’s resistance and stressed the broader implications for the rule of law in Nigeria. Edozie Njoku argued that INEC, under Yakubu’s leadership, sought to demonstrate immunity from court orders, jeopardizing the integrity of the judiciary.

Drawing attention to the overwhelming workload of the Appeal Court Abuja division, Edozie Njoku urged restraint in burdening the court with a matter already resolved by the Supreme Court. He called on Nigerians to support the cause, promising that APGA, under his leadership, would remain steadfast in upholding their hopes and aspirations.
