Elderly Israeli Hostage, Freed by Hamas, in Critical Condition in Intensive Care

On Sunday, Palestinian Hamas militants released 84-year-old Israeli hostage Elma Avraham, who was in critical condition due to serious neglect during her seven weeks in captivity. Avraham, an artist, was kidnapped on October 7 during an unprecedented attack by Hamas fighters on Israel, resulting in the seizure of approximately 240 hostages taken to the Gaza Strip. Avraham was part of a group of 17 hostages, mainly Israelis, released after a seven-week ordeal.

Avraham’s son, Uri Rawitz, revealed that his mother, unable to lock the door to the safe room during the attack, was photographed being taken away on a motorbike by armed fighters along with another hostage. The release of hostages coincided with Israel freeing 39 Palestinian prisoners as part of the third exchange during a four-day truce. Shlomi Codish, head of the Soroka Medical Centre, emphasized the horrific conditions faced by elderly hostages, highlighting total medical neglect and disregard for their well-being during their underground captivity.
