Gunmen Fatally Shoot Ogun State Governor's Director of Finance, Escape with Unspecified Amount

In a tragic incident on Wednesday afternoon, unidentified gunmen, suspected to be armed robbers, fatally shot Mr. Taiwo Oyekanmi, the Director of Finance and Account at the Ogun State Governor’s office. The assailants ambushed Oyekanmi at the NNPC Junction along the IBB Boulevard in the Oke–Mosan area of Abeokuta as he was returning from a bank where he had gone to make withdrawals in anticipation of the state governor’s budget presentation scheduled for Thursday.

Eyewitnesses reported that Oyekanmi was swiftly taken to the state hospital in Ijaiye, Abeokuta, where he was later pronounced dead. The Ogun State Police Command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, was unable to confirm the incident, citing a lack of information on the matter.

Two high-ranking civil servants at the Governor’s Office in Oke-Mosan verified the tragic event, revealing its profound impact on the governor and the entire secretariat, which is now in mourning.

Confirming the incident, the state Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, disclosed that the armed assailants intercepted the vehicle carrying Oyekanmi and four others. Despite initial plans for a police escort, it was absent at the time due to unforeseen circumstances. The attackers, numbering five, stopped the vehicle on a bridge, shot the director, and used a sledgehammer to force open the container holding the withdrawn money before fleeing the scene.

Alamutu detailed ongoing efforts to apprehend the perpetrators, including obtaining CCTV footage from the bank for investigative purposes. He also initiated measures to block potential escape routes from the state, emphasizing the urgency in identifying the suspects who were reportedly masked during the assault.
