Israeli President Urges Musk to Play 'Huge Role' in Combating Anti-Semitism

Israel’s President Isaac Herzog conveyed to Elon Musk the significant role he has in combating anti-Semitism allegedly spreading on Musk’s social media platform, X (formerly Twitter). Criticism has arisen over the proliferation of hate speech on the platform since Musk’s takeover in October 2022. The White House accused Musk of “abhorrent promotion” of anti-Semitism after endorsing a conspiracy theory perceived as targeting Jews. Herzog emphasized the need to fight anti-Semitism on platforms led by Musk.

Musk, during his visit, did not directly mention anti-Semitism but highlighted Hamas militants being influenced by propaganda since childhood. The meeting followed Musk’s visit to a kibbutz community attacked by Hamas militants on October 7. In response to Hamas attacks, Israel launched a relentless bombardment in Gaza, resulting in a temporary truce since Friday.

Musk and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed “security aspects of artificial intelligence” with senior defense officials. The conversation continued on X after touring an attacked community, Kfar Aza. Netanyahu stressed the necessity to demilitarize Gaza post-Hamas destruction and proposed rebuilding, seeking support from Arab allies.

Israel’s Communications Minister mentioned an understanding, in principle, for the use of Starlink satellites in Israel and Gaza, operated by Musk’s SpaceX. In September, Netanyahu urged Musk to combat not only anti-Semitism but all collective hatred on X. Musk, acknowledging the platform’s limitations in preventing hate speech, expressed a general stance against attacking any group.

X Corp is involved in legal actions, suing Media Matters for allegedly driving away advertisers by portraying the platform as anti-Semitic. Musk has also threatened to sue the Anti-Defamation League over claims of increased problematic and racist speech on the site since his takeover.
