New Speaker and Deputy Speaker Emerge in Bauchi Assembly Following Appeal Court Ruling

On November 29, the Bauchi State House of Assembly elected Babayo Akuyam as its new Speaker, representing Hardawa Constituency in Misau Local Government Area. Simultaneously, Ahmed Abdullahi from Dass Constituency in Dass LGA was chosen as the Deputy Speaker. This development unfolded just five days after the Appeal Court in Abuja nullified the former Speaker, Abubakar Suleiman, who represented Ningi Central Constituency. Suleiman, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member, had initially won the Ningi Central Constituency election, defeating his APC rival Khalid Abdulmalik-Ningi. However, the Appeal Court’s three-man panel overturned the tribunal’s ruling, instructing the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct a rerun in 10 polling units. This legal development prompted the Bauchi Assembly’s swift action in electing a new Speaker and Deputy Speaker, marking a significant shift in leadership following the court’s decision to nullify the previous Speaker’s position.
