Tinubu Advocates Regional Unity at ECOWAS Parliament 2023 Session”

During the 2nd Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Parliament in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu urged for increased regional integration within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Represented by Deputy Senate President Jibirn Barau, Tinubu emphasized the pivotal role of regional integration in Africa’s progress.

Scheduled from November 22 to December 15, 2023, this session features various activities, including the induction of new parliamentarians and discussions on critical issues divided among committees. These discussions span Agriculture, Environment, Natural Resources, Health, Legal Affairs, Gender, and Women Empowerment.

Tinubu expressed optimism that the deliberations during this session would have a lasting impact, inspiring future generations. He highlighted the responsibility of parliamentarians to represent the aspirations of West African citizens, particularly those enduring significant hardships.

Recognizing ECOWAS’ achievements in connectivity and unity, Tinubu praised the leadership’s commitment to democracy, freedom, and justice across member states. Drawing parallels with the European Economic Community, he emphasized the need for greater cooperation and integration among African nations to address unique challenges effectively.

Tinubu stressed that integration is not merely a choice but an imperative for West Africa’s advancement, citing the need to leave a lasting legacy for future generations. He urged drawing inspiration from the European Union’s model to strive for West Africa’s progress through unity and collaboration.

The session will also focus on key areas such as the 2024 Consolidated Community Budget and the progress of ECOWAS Integration and Development Programme.
