Anambra Reports 98,000 Individuals Living with HIV/AIDS

The Anambra State AIDS Control Agency and the Ministry of Health have revealed that the state is currently home to 98,960 individuals living with HIV/AIDS. Commissioner for Health, Afam Obidike, shared this information during a media briefing in Awka, emphasizing the significance of the announcement ahead of the upcoming World AIDS Day on December 1. Anambra ranks as the fifth highest in HIV prevalence in Nigeria, with a state prevalence of 1.4%, the highest in the South-East region. Of the total number, 58% are aware of their HIV status, and 44,808 are actively undergoing treatment. The state has been making strides toward achieving the Global 95-95-95 targets, currently standing at 65:81:93. Notably, there has been a 46% decline in new infections and a 32% reduction in AIDS-related deaths between 2021 and 2023, indicating positive progress in the state’s efforts to combat HIV/AIDS.
