Court of Appeal Upholds Alex Otti's Victory as Abia State Governor

Court of Appeal Dismisses Appeals, Affirms Alex Otti as Abia State Governor

The Court of Appeal in Lagos has unanimously dismissed appeals challenging the election of Governor Alex Otti in Abia State. Filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Congress (APC), and their respective governorship candidates, the court upheld Otti’s victory, asserting compliance with the Electoral Act. Describing the appeals as a “comedy skit brought to a democratic setting,” the three-man panel ruled that they lacked merit.

The court clarified that matters of political party membership fall within the party’s jurisdiction. Otti’s membership with the Labour Party and his submission to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) validated his eligibility for the election. Addressing concerns about the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) raised by the PDP and its candidate, the court noted the insufficient evidence presented to support the claims. The ruling solidifies Governor Alex Otti’s standing, confirming his victory in the election.
