Deadly Explosion Occurs During Catholic Mass in Philippines, Claiming Three Lives and Injuring Nine

A tragic explosion at Mindanao State University’s gymnasium in Marawi City, southern Philippines, claimed three lives and left nine others injured during a Catholic mass service on Sunday, as reported by local authorities. Governor Mamintal Alonto Adiong Jr of Lanao del Sur province condemned the “violent bombing,” emphasizing the province’s commitment to upholding basic human rights, including the right to practice religion.

The university expressed deep sorrow and shock, suspending classes indefinitely. A witness staying near the gymnasium compared the loud blast to a power transformer explosion. Several police officers and ambulances were deployed to the main campus, where the incident occurred.

The authorities are investigating the explosion, exploring the possibility of involvement by pro-Islamic State militants. Mindanao has long grappled with violence due to an insurgency by Islamic rebel groups. Marawi, in particular, witnessed a five-month ISIL (ISIS)-inspired siege in 2017, resulting in over 1,000 casualties. Governor Adiong underscored the condemnation of terrorist attacks on educational institutions, which play a crucial role in promoting a culture of peace and shaping the nation’s future leaders. The region continues to face challenges from extremist elements, necessitating ongoing efforts to maintain security and protect the well-being of its residents.
