Gaza in Crisis– Deir el-Balah Bears Brunt of Israeli Strikes, Described as 'Hell on Earth'

Israel’s offensive in Gaza continues into a second day, following the expiration of a seven-day truce with Hamas. Qatar and Egypt are currently facilitating talks to seek an extension of the ceasefire. The United Nations expressed grave concern on Saturday, stating that the renewed violence exacerbates the already dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN humanitarian office in Geneva, described the situation as “Hell on Earth” in Gaza. UN aid chief Martin Griffiths lamented the rapid escalation, with numerous casualties reported in just a few hours. Families were once again instructed to evacuate, compounding the despair. Griffiths emphasized the dire circumstances facing the people of Gaza, stating that they have “nowhere safe to go and very little to survive on,” particularly affecting children, women, and men.

Reports from Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary in Deir el-Balah in central Gaza indicate ongoing Israeli attacks, including shelling by tanks and gunboat assaults on the coastline. Numerous homes and at least three mosques have been targeted across various areas of the Gaza Strip. The Israeli army reported hitting over 400 targets overnight, including the Khan Younis area in the south, where tens of thousands of civilians had evacuated over the past month.
