House of Representatives Acts to Prevent Alleged Division of Benin Kingdom by Edo State Government

The House of Representatives has taken steps to address the ongoing crisis between Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State and Oba of Benin, Ewuare II. In response to a motion of urgent public importance moved by Billy Osawaru and others on Tuesday, the House resolved to establish an ad hoc committee for conflict resolution.

Osawaru highlighted concerns about attempts to divide the kingdom into smaller chiefdoms, expressing worries about the state government’s move to create a parallel customary council in the Benin South Senatorial District. He emphasized the customary dominionship of the Oba of Benin over the entire district through the Benin Traditional Council.

To address the conflict, the House set up an Ad Hoc Committee tasked with engaging the Edo State Government and the Benin Traditional Council. Additionally, the committee will interact with relevant federal security agencies to prevent potential law and order breakdown in Edo South and the state as a whole. The committee is expected to submit its report within one month.
