N6.9 Billion Scandal: Unveiling the Airlift of N1.2 Billion Cash to Ekiti for Fayose

Former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, testified on November 29, 2023, before Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court, Abuja, revealing details about the airlifting of N1.219 billion cash to former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose. This action was prompted by the inability of the defunct commercial bank, Diamond Bank, to disburse significant sums of money. Fayose and his firm, Spotless Investment Limited, are facing trial by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged involvement in N6.9 billion money laundering.

Obanikoro claimed that he received information about the N1.219 billion from the former National Security Adviser, Col Sambo Dasuki, and did not know the source of the money. He stated that the funds were meant for the Ekiti election and originated from Diamond Bank. Due to Diamond Bank’s incapacity, the money was airlifted from Lagos to Ekiti in two tranches using two aircraft.

During the trial, Obanikoro clarified his role, stating that he handed over the cash to Mr. Agbele for delivery to Fayose. He emphasized that he did not take any money, contrary to a publication by a Lagos-based online platform. The court adjourned the matter to February 27, 2024, for the continuation of the trial.
