NAFDAC Takes Swift Action— Seals Drug Shops and Pharmacy in Lagos for Illicit Sale of Controlled Substances

In a decisive move, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken stringent action against the illegal trade of unregistered and controlled drugs in Lagos. Two drug shops owned by Blue Choice Pharmaceutical Ltd. in Idumota and a pharmacy in Surulere named VaticanBell Pharmacy have been sealed by the regulatory authority. Furthermore, Global Oneword Healthcare Ltd.’s mini drug warehouse in Coker Village, Orile Iganmu, met a similar fate due to its failure to comply with necessary regulations, specifically the absence of a required poison book.

Mr. Afolabi Aderemi, Deputy Director at NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, disclosed that the operation was initiated based on intelligence reports highlighting the illicit sale of drugs in these establishments. Aderemi emphasized the severity of the situation, revealing that these facilities were found selling 71 drugs internationally prohibited from individual or pharmacy sales, categorizing the situation as organized crime. NAFDAC reiterated its dedication to combating the trade in unregistered drugs.

The proprietors of the sealed establishments have been summoned to NAFDAC’s office for further investigations, underscoring the agency’s commitment to curbing the circulation of unauthorized pharmaceuticals. Mr. Devang Ugwu, a Clinical Pharmacist and Deputy Director at NAFDAC’s Enforcement Directorate, clarified that controlled drugs, falling under narcotic products with distinct schedules, can only be issued by the Federal Ministry of Health. This authorized issuance ensures that pharmacies obtain these products through legitimate channels while maintaining accurate records.

In response to the regulatory actions, Mr. Innocent Ezennia, the first Vice-chairman of the Lagos State Medicine Dealers Association, Island Zone, expressed the association’s dedication to collaboration with NAFDAC. Recognizing the importance of raids and enforcement in purifying business areas, he pledged ongoing cooperation to facilitate seamless operations during NAFDAC’s regulatory initiatives. This collective effort aims to uphold the integrity of pharmaceutical practices and protect public health.
