Nigeria Dominates WAFCON Qualifier with a 5-0 Victory over Cape Verde


The Super Falcons of Nigeria showcased their supremacy in the initial leg of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final round qualifier by securing an impressive 5-0 triumph over Cape Verde on Thursday. Taking command right from the kickoff at the MKO Abiola Stadium, the Super Falcons dictated the match’s pace, creating numerous scoring opportunities. In the seventh minute, Uchenna Kanu thrilled the home crowd by breaking the deadlock, setting the tone for a dominant performance.

Continuing their attacking momentum, the Super Falcons extended their lead to 2-0 in the 25th minute through Gift Monday, capitalizing on a goalmouth scramble. Kanu secured her brace just before halftime with a brilliant finish from a Toni Payne assist, ensuring a commanding 3-0 lead.

In the second half, strategic substitutions by Super Falcons coach Justin Madugu, bringing on Esther Onyenezide and Esther Okoronkwo, proved effective. Okoronkwo made an immediate impact, scoring a sublime goal in the 66th minute from an Esther Akudo Ogbonna cross. Her scoring spree continued in the 77th minute, sealing a resounding 5-0 victory.

With this dominant display, the Super Falcons have taken a significant step towards securing a spot in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. The team will head to Praia for the second leg on 5 December, aiming to complete a double and secure their place in the continental tournament with grandeur.
