Unusual Robot Arm Takes Inspiration from Octopus, Utilizes Suction Cups for Object Manipulation

Researchers from Beihang University and Tsinghua University have developed a peculiar octopus-inspired robot arm. Although not an actual robotic octopus, this soft robotic arm imitates the flexible movements of its real-life counterpart, capable of curling, stretching, and unfurling as needed. The arm employs vacuum pressure within suction cups on its underside to securely grasp objects by curling around them. The team utilized mathematical propagation for the arm’s five segments, mimicking the nervous system of an octopus arm. Electrical messages are transmitted via liquid metal wires, and the cup tips feature both suction cups and temperature sensors, enhancing the arm’s adaptability and functionality.
